Kim Dokter is a Dutch FASD self-advocate, educator, speaker, and member of the Adult Leadership Cooperative of FASD Changemakers whose work focuses on improving professional understanding of FASD and making health and social-care systems more responsive to people living with the disability.
Kim represents an important European perspective within the international FASD self-advocacy community. She has participated in the work of the Adult Leadership Cooperative of FASD Changemakers and was listed as a member of the FASD Leadership Committee for the 2024 International Research Conference on FASD, reflecting her participation in the growing international network of adults with living experience who are helping shape research, education, and professional practice.
A major emphasis of Kim’s advocacy is professional education. In the Netherlands, she has provided FASD training to mental-health professionals, explaining how FASD may present and how professionals can better recognize and support people with the disability. Her advocacy emphasizes that FASD is a spectrum and that effective support requires individualized responses rather than standardized assumptions.
Kim also contributes to community-led research. As a member of the ALC FASD Changemakers, she has helped promote research examining the services and supports used by people with FASD. Her work emphasizes that the experiences of people living with FASD need to be visible and directly included in decisions about health care, social services, and professional practice.
Within the Adult Leadership Cooperative, Kim brings a strong perspective on European systems, mental-health practice, professional education, and the need to translate living experience into better service design.
